Short answer
A fake Hermes bag is a handbag built to copy the shape, hardware and logo of a Hermes model. The models copied most are the Birkin, the Kelly, the Constance, the Evelyne and the Picotin 18 and 22. Prices run from about $40 for PU leather to $1,200 or more for a mirror grade bag. Hermes has never licensed these designs to another maker. In the United States, sale of these bags is trademark infringement under the Lanham Act.
Models and size numbers
Hermes sizes are given in centimeters. A Birkin 25 measures 25 cm wide, the 30 measures 30 cm, the 35 measures 35 cm. Kelly sizes follow the same scale: 20, 25, 28, 32, 35. Copies use the same numbers, so a Birkin 25 from a replica seller means the same footprint as the Hermes original.
Weight is a check. A Birkin 30 in Togo leather weighs about 1.1 kg empty. Copies in PU or split leather weigh 700 g to 900 g. A light bag with stiff corners points to a bonded leather shell.
Leather and stitching
- PU and bonded leather: lowest tier, $40 to $90, plastic gloss, no visible pores.
- Split grain with a stamped grain: $90 to $250. The grain sits on the surface and flattens with use.
- Full grain calfskin sold as Togo, Clemence or Epsom: $250 to $700.
- Mirror grade with full grain leather, hand-set saddle stitch and plated brass hardware: $700 to $1,500.
Stitch count separates the tiers. Machine stitching runs about 8 to 9 stitches per inch. Hand saddle stitch runs 10 to 11 per inch and sits at a slight angle. Edge paint on low tier bags is thin and chips. Hermes uses edge paint over a waxed edge. Most copies do not wax.

Hardware
Original hardware is palladium plated brass or gold plated brass. The turnlock and plates on a Birkin weigh about 90 g to 120 g. Copies use zinc alloy, which weighs less and pits. Plating on low tier hardware is under 1 micron thick and wears through in months. The plate engraving reads HERMES PARIS with a letter stamp. On a copy the font or the engraving depth is wrong.
Legal status in the US
Hermes holds registered trademarks on the name, the H buckle, the Kelly shape and the Birkin trade dress. Under 15 U.S.C. 1114, selling goods that carry a copy of a registered mark is infringement. Under 19 U.S.C. 1526, importing goods that copy a recorded trademark is prohibited. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments and destroys them. Personal use is not a safe harbor. CBP can seize a single bag at the border.
A first civil case can award profits, damages and attorney fees. Willful counterfeiting raises statutory damages to $2,000,000 per mark per type of goods.
How women style the copies
Size drives the look more than the logo. A 25 cm bag reads as an evening bag on a 165 cm frame. A 30 cm bag reads as a daily bag. A 35 cm bag reads as a work or travel bag and adds visual weight at the hip.
Colors that hold value match the original palette: gold, black, etoupe, orange, etain. Hardware choice follows jewelry more than skin tone. Gold tone pairs with yellow gold, palladium with silver. A twilly on the handle covers wear on a copy handle.
