Short answer
A fake vintage Herbag is a copy of the Hermès Herbag, a canvas bag with leather trim that Hermès launched in 1998. "Vintage" here means the first generation, built before the Herbag Zip arrived in 2011. Copies run from poor to close. The tells sit in five places: canvas weave, leather trim, hardware, stitching, and the date stamp.
What the original is
Hermès released the Herbag in 1998 as a canvas entry to the line. The body is toile canvas. The frame, handles, and flap are leather. The frame holds the canvas body with press studs, so the body lifts out. Two sizes came first: PM at about 31 cm and MM at about 39 cm. Hardware is palladium plated. The canvas carries a printed HERMÈS mark. The leather carries a blind stamp and a date code.
Vintage vs Herbag Zip
The Herbag Zip came later and added a zip top, an outside pocket, and a hanging pouch. A bag sold as a 1990s piece with a zip top is not from the first run. Check the closure against the year the seller claims. The early bag closes with a leather flap and a strap.
Five places fakes fail
- Canvas. Original toile has a tight weave and a matte hand. Copies read glossy or loose. Print edges on copies bleed.
- Leather trim. Hermès used vache leather with visible grain and thin edge paint. Copies show thick paint, a plastic feel, or a printed grain that repeats.
- Hardware. Palladium has weight. Engraving on copies is shallow or off-center. The studs that hold the body should seat with a click.
- Stitching. Saddle stitch runs slanted and even on both faces. Most copies use a machine lock stitch, so one side comes out flat.
- Stamps. The blind stamp is pressed, not inked. The date code sits in a square or circle with a letter and a craftsman mark. Copies reuse one code across many bags.
Price as a signal
Authentic vintage Herbag resale listings run from about $1,000 to $3,000. Condition, size, and trim set the spread. A "vintage" Herbag at $200 to $400 with new-looking canvas is a replica. Price alone proves nothing. A low price plus a fresh date stamp plus stiff canvas is a pattern.
Questions for the seller
- What is the date code, and does the letter format match that year?
- Do the press studs hold the canvas body with a click?
- Is the edge paint thin on the trim, or thick?
- Can you send a straight-on photo of the blind stamp at 100 percent crop?
- Has the bag been re-dyed, re-painted, or re-stitched?
What no photo settles
Canvas weight, leather smell, and hardware heft do not carry through a photo. A remote check can clear obvious faults. It cannot confirm the rest. On a bag at four figures, pay for a hands-on authentication before money moves. Records of vintage Herbag production by year are not public, so any claim about a exact year rests on the stamp and the closure type.
