Most fake Louis Vuitton straps are not leather at all. They are polyurethane or PVC film bonded to a knit or woven backing, or a thin split-grain hide with a heavy plastic topcoat. Genuine LV straps are either vegetable-tanned cowhide, the pale vachetta you see on a Neverfull, or coated canvas on models like the Speedy Bandoulière, finished with solid brass hardware. Once you know which material you are looking at, the strap stops being the hard part of the check.

What real LV strap material actually is

Louis Vuitton uses a small number of materials on straps, and each one behaves in a predictable way.

Fake Louis Vuitton Bag Strap Information: How to Spot a Counterfeit Strap

  • Vachetta. Vegetable-tanned cowhide, undyed, with no surface finish. It feels dry and slightly waxy, and it darkens to honey over months of handling. Edges are burnished, not painted.
  • Treated leather. Epi, Empreinte and the black leather straps are dyed and finished, so they resist water, but the grain still has depth and the piece stays soft when you fold it.
  • Coated canvas. Cotton canvas with a PVC-based coating on both faces. The strap is flexible, has a faint grain texture, and does not crackle when you twist it.
  • Hardware. Brass, engraved on the clips and rings, with real weight in the hand. It tarnishes slowly and polishes back up.

What fake straps are usually made of

  • PU or faux leather on a knit backing. The most common cheap option. Stretch the strap and the backing shows through at the edges.
  • PVC sheet with printed grain. The pattern repeats in a regular grid, so the same pore sits in the same spot every few millimeters.
  • Bonded leather. Shredded leather scrap pressed with a binder, then embossed. It splits along the fold line within a season.
  • Split-grain with a plastic topcoat. This one fools people, because it is technically leather. The top layer is sanded off and replaced with a stamped film, so there are no open pores.
  • Plastic edge paint. Rolls off in strips instead of feathering into the leather.
  • Zinc alloy hardware. Light, with a shallow engraving and electroplating that turns brassy green or flakes at the clip spring.

Checks that take under a minute

I start with smell. Real vachetta smells faintly of tannin and dry hide. PU and PVC smell like a shower curtain, and the smell stays after weeks in open air.

Next, grain. Zoom in with a phone camera. Leather pores are irregular, unevenly spaced, and vary in size across the strap. Printed grain is uniform and repeats. If the stamping lines up perfectly along the whole length, that is a film on top of something else.

Then bend. Fold the strap in half and press. Leather creases into fine, branching lines. PU whitens at the fold or springs back stiff. Bonded leather cracks along the crease.

Check the edge last. Burnished leather edges show fiber and darken. Painted edges are glossy and even until they chip. Run a fingernail along the edge and see which one you get.

Hardware is the tiebreaker. Weigh a clip in your hand, look at the depth of the engraving, and check whether the plating is wearing on the high points. Plated alloy shows copper or grey within weeks. Solid brass just dulls.

Why the strap gives the bag away

Prints, stamps and date codes get copied closely, because they cost almost nothing to reproduce. Material does not. Vachetta takes months to tan and it patinas on its own schedule. Coated canvas needs a specific coating weight to drape right. Those are the costs a cheap build skips, and the strap is where you feel it, because it is the part you touch every time you pick the bag up.

The aging test

You can predict the material by what happens in the first two months. Vachetta darkens and softens. Treated leather stays supple and takes scuffs that buff out. Coated canvas stays flat and clean. PU and PVC go the other way: the surface dulls, the edge paint lifts, and the fold lines turn white. If a strap peels, flakes or smells like glue after a few weeks, no amount of correct stitching changes what it is made of.

Bottom line

Match the strap to the model before you judge anything else. Vachetta means pale, unfinished, burnished edges. Leather straps mean open pores and soft folds. Canvas straps mean flexible coated fabric with no plastic crackle. Anything else, from a knit backing to a repeating grain pattern to painted edges that chip, points to PU, PVC, bonded leather or a plastic-coated split.
