Short answer

A knockoff Hermès Jypsiere 39 in Clemence leather, Etoupe color, copies a bag that measures about 39 cm wide. Authentic Jypsiere 39 prices run near $8,000 to $10,000 on the resale market, based on year and condition. Replica versions sell for about $250 to $1,500. The gap shows in the leather grain, the Etoupe tone, the strap hardware, and the interior stamp.

What the original is

Hermès released the Jypsiere in 2008. The design is credited to Jean-Paul Gaultier, creative director at the house from 2003 to 2010. The shape is a crossbody messenger: rounded front flap, two leather straps, a turn-lock, and an adjustable shoulder strap. Sizes are listed as 28, 31, 34, 37, and 39 cm. The 39 is the largest.

Published dimensions for the 39 differ by source. Common figures are 39 cm wide, 30 cm tall, and 15 cm deep. Hermès does not print a size chart for every production year, so resale listings can vary by 1 to 2 cm.

Clemence leather

Clemence is a bull calfskin from French tanneries. The grain is pebbled, the surface is matte with a mild sheen, and the hand is soft and heavy. The leather slouches with use. On a Jypsiere 39 the slouch shows along the bottom panel and at the flap corners.

Replica makers press corrected-grain or split leather to fake the pebble pattern. The tell is scale. Real Clemence grain varies in cell size across the hide. A stamped copy repeats one cell size.

Etoupe color

Etoupe is a gray-taupe tone with a brown base and a faint green-gray cast. Hermès pairs Etoupe with white contrast stitching on many bags. That contrast is a fixed part of the look, not an option.

Copies drift toward flat brown or warm beige. Under daylight the shift is clear next to a true Etoupe item.

Where replicas differ

  • Stitching: authentic Etoupe bags use white thread at a set stitch count per centimeter. Copies use cream or gray thread and uneven spacing.
  • Hardware: the turn-lock, rings, and strap hooks are palladium or gold plated. Copies show plating wear at the edges within months.
  • Strap: the original has a wide adjustable leather strap with a keeper. Copies use thinner leather and a metal slider.
  • Interior: one main compartment, a zip pocket, and a slip pocket. Copies add branded lining and skip the blind stamp.
  • Stamp: Hermès blind stamps sit on the flap or interior panel, small and shallow. Copies burn or print the mark.
  • Weight: Clemence is a heavy leather. A 39 with hardware weighs more than 1 kg empty. Light copies point to split leather.

Price tiers

Counterfeit supply splits into tiers. Entry copies cost $150 to $400. Mid tier runs $400 to $800. High end replicas claim $900 to $1,500. None of these match Clemence leather origin, since the tannery supply stays with Hermès.

Legal note

US law bars import and sale of counterfeit goods. 19 U.S.C. § 1526 lets CBP seize shipments. 15 U.S.C. § 1114 covers trademark infringement in civil suits. Hermès files cases against sellers each year.
