A fake Hermès Kelly 28 Retourne fails on four checks: measured size, the blind stamp, hardware engraving, and stitch pattern. Each check needs the bag in hand. Photos hide the details that matter.

Fake Hermès Kelly 28 Retourne: A Buyer's Inspection Guide

Size and construction

The Kelly 28 Retourne measures 28 cm wide, 22 cm high, and 12 cm deep. Retourne means the bag was sewn inside out. The stitch line sits inside the top edge and the corners look soft. Sellier is the opposite: outside stitching and hard corners. A copy that arrives with outside stitching is a Sellier shape, not a Retourne. Check the base. A Retourne base runs as one piece with the body. Copies add a separate bottom panel with a seam that shows.

Blind stamp and date letter

Open the bag. Look at the inside back wall, upper left. Hermès presses HERMÈS PARIS and MADE IN FRANCE into the leather with no ink and no foil. A letter inside a square sits beside the craftsperson number. Hermès changed the stamp format several times since the 1940s, so one letter does not date a bag without a reference chart. A horseshoe symbol marks a special order. On a real bag the stamp sits deep and clean. Copies use a heated press that burns the grain or leaves a shallow mark. Copies also space the letters wrong and place the stamp in the wrong spot.

Hardware

  • Turnlock plate: engraved HERMÈS. Letters are cut into the metal, not stamped on the surface.
  • Sangle plates: four on the front. Screws turn with a driver. Fakes use glue or fixed rivets.
  • Padlock and keys: numbered. The number on the key matches the number on the lock.
  • Clochette: the leather bell holds two keys and is cut from one piece of leather.
  • Weight: brass with gold plate or palladium. Copies use zinc or pot metal and feel light in the hand.

Stitches and thread

Hermès uses saddle stitch: two needles, one waxed linen thread, worked by hand. Stitches slant at the same angle and the spacing stays even across the whole bag. Machine stitching on copies loops, skips, and wanders at the corners. Real thread is linen and looks dull. Polyester thread shines under a lamp.

What photos cannot show

Leather smell, bag weight, and the feel of the turnlock need a hand on the item. Togo and Epsom have different grain and different drape. Ask a seller for three photos: the blind stamp, the turnlock plate shot at an angle, and the inside seam at the top edge.

Documents prove nothing

Boxes, dust bags, rain covers, and receipts copy at low cost. A receipt is not proof of origin. Auction houses and resale platforms examine the bag itself, not the paperwork. Pay for an independent authentication before money changes hands. Hermès does not publish a public authentication guide, so no seller can claim an official check.
