A replica Chanel Classic Flap gets graded on seven checks: stitch count, quilt alignment, turnlock engraving, chain build, interior stamp, date code format and leather grain. Each check returns a number or a yes/no. No single check settles the result. Run all seven, write down the readings, then grade.
The 7 checks in order
1. Stitch count
Count the stitches along one side of a quilted diamond on the flap. Reference bags carry 10 to 11 stitches per inch. Replica panels often show 7 to 9. Count three diamonds on the flap, body and back pocket. A split count across panels points to a lower grade build.
2. Quilt alignment
Follow the diamond points across the flap edge, the gusset and the back pocket. Points meet at the same height. Replica back pockets sit 2 to 4 mm off the body quilt. Open the flap and compare the inner quilt against the outer quilt.
3. Turnlock engraving
The CC turnlock carries two stamps. "CHANEL" sits on the left plate, "PARIS" on the right plate. Letter height runs 1 mm or less. Replica stamps show thicker strokes and wider letter spacing. Drag a fingernail across the letters. Reference stamps sit flush with the plate.
4. Chain and strap
The medium Classic Flap measures 25 x 15.5 x 6.5 cm. Check the listed size against a tape measure. Measure strap drop in both positions. Weigh the chain on a kitchen scale and record grams. Replica chains read lighter, and the leather strip pulls loose at the link ends.
5. Interior stamp
The gold foil stamp reads "CHANEL" with the registered mark, then "MADE IN FRANCE" or "MADE IN ITALY" below. The face is a serif font with flat serifs. Replica stamps sit low in the panel, use a sans-serif face, or drop the registered mark.
6. Date code or chip
Chanel replaced the hologram sticker with a metal microchip plate in April 2021. Stickers carry 8 digits and a 2-letter prefix. The chip sits in the interior pocket seam and scans to a code. A bag that pairs a sticker-era serial with a 2022 receipt does not match.
7. Leather and edge paint
Caviar leather shows a pebbled grain with even spacing across panels. Lambskin shows fine pores and a soft hand. Edge paint runs about 1 mm wide on the flap and strap ends. Replica edge paint shows drips and bubbles under a 10x loupe.
Scoring the bag
- Count 3 stitch runs. Record each number.
- Photograph the back pocket quilt against the body quilt.
- Shoot the turnlock at 10x and measure letter height.
- Weigh the chain in grams.
- Read the interior stamp line by line.
- Check the serial format against the production year.
- Inspect edge paint at the strap ends.
Five clean checks out of seven is a pass on the visible details. Two or more misses is a fail.
What photos cannot show
Chain weight, stamp depth and leather hand need the bag in hand or on a scale. Ask for a scale photo with the bag on it and a macro shot of the turnlock. A seller who sends styled photos alone supplies no data.
