The short answer
A replica Chanel Classic Flap in caviar is a copy of Chanel's quilted flap bag made with pebbled calfskin. Chanel does not make, sell, or authenticate these bags. The word "caviar" describes the leather grain, not a grade of copy. In the US, importing or selling a counterfeit bag is illegal.
What caviar leather is
Caviar is Chanel's name for pebbled calfskin. The grain is pressed into the hide. The surface resists scratches better than the lambskin used on the 2.55. Chanel introduced the Classic Flap in 1983 under Karl Lagerfeld. The bag pairs the 2.55 shoulder strap with a CC turn-lock closure and a leather-interwoven chain. Lambskin versions exist; caviar versions outsell them in most markets because the hide holds shape.
Sizes and measurements
Chanel sizes the Classic Flap by width:
- Mini: about 20 cm
- Small: about 23 cm
- Medium: about 25 cm
- Jumbo: about 30 cm
- Maxi: about 33 cm
Replica listings use these numbers, sometimes with a 1 cm to 2 cm variance. Ask for measured width, height, and depth in centimeters before you compare a listing to a size chart.
Price context
Chanel lists the Medium Classic Flap in caviar above $10,000 in the US as of 2024. Resale prices move with condition, color, and hardware. Replica listings run from about $150 to $600. A high price does not prove a close copy, and a low price does not prove a poor one. Photos show the outside of a bag; they do not show the interior, the stitching on the base, or the weight of the chain.
Points that separate copies
- Quilt alignment. The diamond pattern should meet the flap edge without a partial diamond at the border. Misaligned quilts appear on low-cost copies.
- Stitch count. Sellers cite 8 to 10 stitches per inch on the original. Count on a photo before you trust the claim.
- Hardware plating. Chanel stopped using 24k gold plating around 2008. Current hardware is gold-tone or silver-tone metal. A listing that advertises "24k gold hardware" describes something the original does not have.
- Interior stamp. The original carries a "Made in France" or "Made in Italy" stamp and a burgundy leather lining.
- Serial marking. Chanel used hologram stickers with serial numbers until 2021, then moved to a metal plate with a chip. Copies imitate the sticker far more often than the plate.
US legal status
Counterfeit handbags infringe Chanel's registered trademarks. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments at ports of entry, and trademark owners can record their marks with CBP to support those seizures. A shipment of one bag can be held. Sellers who ship into the US carry the risk of seizure and civil suit; buyers carry the risk of losing the payment and the bag.
What no listing can prove
No photo set proves leather origin, tannery, or hardware alloy. A copy is a copy. It will not pass authentication by Chanel or by a resale house, and it has no resale value as a Chanel product. Treat any "1:1" or "mirror quality" label as a seller claim with no independent check behind it.
