Short answer

"Authenticated" on a replica Hermès listing means the seller compared the item to a genuine bag or to reference photos. It is a seller claim. It is not a factory certificate and not a third-party verdict. The word does not mean the bag is genuine. The check is done by the seller, not by Hermès.

What gets compared

  • Blind stamp: the letter and shape pressed into the leather. The letter ties to a production year and the shape ties to a workshop.
  • Hardware: engraving depth, font, and spacing on the turnlock, feet, and strap plates.
  • Stitch: Hermès uses a saddle stitch with two needles and waxed thread. Sellers count stitches per inch and measure thread angle.
  • Leather: grain, pore size, and the edge paint on cut panels.
  • Zipper: pull shape, tooth profile, and the stamp on the slider.
  • Interior: pocket layout, lining, and the stamp on the clochette.

Where a photo check stops

A photo set shows surface detail. It does not show the leather supplier, the thread wax, or the hardware alloy. Two bags from one workshop can differ on these points, and a check on one bag does not cover the next bag in the same batch. Listings that use the word "authenticated" do not publish the reference bag, the date of the check, or the name of the checker.

Questions to ask before paying

  1. Which reference did you use: a genuine bag in hand, or photos?
  2. Who ran the check, and on what date?
  3. Can you send photos of the blind stamp, the hardware engraving, and the interior stamp?
  4. What is the return policy if the bag differs from the photos?

Legal note for US buyers

Importing counterfeit goods is illegal in the United States. CBP can seize a shipment and assess a penalty. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, and trademark owners can sue under the Lanham Act. Small personal orders get stopped at ports as well. A seizure letter is the common result.

Cost and batch notes

Wholesale replica pricing tracks leather grade, hardware plating, and stitch labor. A seller who quotes one price for a "Hermès-grade" bag and a second price for the same bag "authenticated" is charging for the check, not for a different bag. Ask for the batch number and a photo of the bag you will receive.
