Short answer
An antique fake Gucci bag is a counterfeit handbag made between about 1965 and 1995. Collectors buy them for the period details: wrong fonts, plastic zippers, off-register GG canvas. Prices run $25 to $250. They are not authentic Gucci and they carry no value as Gucci. A 1990s counterfeit is vintage under the 20-year rule. True antiques are 100 years old, so no Gucci counterfeit qualifies yet. Gucci started in 1921, so the oldest possible copy is about 100 years younger than that mark.
Why the category exists

How to date a counterfeit
- Zipper. Coil zippers point to 1970 or later. Metal zippers with maker stamps on the pull point to the 1950s and 1960s.
- Serial number. Gucci added serial numbers to many bags from the 1960s. Two rows of digits on the back of a leather tab. Copies from the 1970s and 1980s show one row, a stamped number, or nothing.
- Logo. The interlocking double G meets at the center. Copies from the 1970s sit off-center or print one G reversed.
- Hardware. Brass plate over pot metal. Look for pitting and green verdigris. High-end Gucci lines used solid brass.
- Stamp. Fakes read "Made in Italy" with odd spacing, or "Italy" alone, or "Genuine Leather." Gucci did not use that last phrase.
- Canvas. Check the diamond joins at the seam. Copies show thick print and bleed at the edges.
Price ranges
Sold listings on eBay and Etsy for 1970s and 1980s counterfeit Gucci bags land between $25 and $120. Bamboo-handle copies in usable condition reach $150 to $250. The Jackie bag, renamed in 1961 for Jackie Kennedy, uses a piston closure. Copies from that decade list at $100 to $200. Authentic Jackie bags in clean condition sell for $1,000 and up. Mixing the two up is the main money risk in this category.
Legal notes
Selling a counterfeit as authentic is trademark infringement and fraud. In the US, the Trademark Counterfeiting Act covers civil damages and criminal penalties. Gucci has sued sellers and platforms. A listing that says "vintage fake" or "not authentic" avoids a false claim of origin. It does not make the item legal to import. US Customs can seize counterfeit goods at the border.

What to check before buying
- Ask for a photo of the back of the leather tab.
- Ask for the zipper pull markings.
- Ask for total length and strap drop in centimeters.
- Compare monogram alignment at the side seam.
- Get the words "not authentic" from the seller in writing.
Value outlook
Demand is small. Buyers are vintage dealers, prop stylists, and collectors of 1970s and 1980s design. Supply shrinks each year because many of these bags went in the trash. Prices for the top shapes have moved up since 2015. The floor has not moved. Treat the category as period design at period prices, not as an investment.
