Short answer
Condition moves the price of a Burberry collectible bag more than the model name does. Two Nova Check totes of the same size can differ by 60 percent in resale price when one has cracked edge paint and worn gold-tone plating. Buyers grade five parts: canvas, leather trim, hardware, interior, and stamps. Resellers list bags on a five-level scale: pristine, excellent, very good, good, fair.
Condition grades
- Pristine. Unused. Tags attached. No marks on canvas or trim. Hardware shows no scratches.
- Excellent. Carried once or twice. Faint hardware scratches under direct light. No rub on corners.
- Very good. Light wear. Minor corner rub. Hardware scuffs visible in daylight.
- Good. Visible wear. Corner rub through the leather. Some plating loss. Interior marks.
- Fair. Cracking, fading, odor, or missing parts.
Five checkpoints
1. Check canvas and line alignment
Nova Check and Vintage Check sit on coated canvas. Rub the print with a dry thumb. Bags from the 1990s and early 2000s yellow at the top edge where hands and straps touch. Look at the seam where the front panel meets the side gusset. The lines should meet at the same angle on both sides. Misaligned lines point to a repair or a low-grade copy.

2. Leather trim and edge paint
Trim is calf leather on most models, with painted edges. Edge paint cracks first at the strap fold and at the top rim of the opening. Run a fingernail along the edge. Flaking paint means the bag needs refinishing. Loose stitches at the handle base are a structural fault, not a cosmetic one.
3. Hardware
Plating wears at the buckle, the zipper pull, and the base feet. Light scratches are normal on bags over 10 years old. Deep pits, green residue, or a magnet that will not hold point to base-metal replacement. Check that both ends of the zipper sit flush with the tape.
4. Interior
Linings vary by line: jacquard check, plain twill, and leather. Ink marks and perfume odor lower value. Odor does not come out of coated canvas. Ask for a photo of the interior base with the bag open flat.
5. Tags, stamps, and date codes
Look for the woven label inside, the made-in stamp, and the serial or date code on newer models. Faded stamps are normal for the age. Cut or missing labels drop the grade one level. Burberry changed its check trademark and label design over the decades, so compare the label with the production year, not with a current bag.
Photos to request
- All four corners, close up
- Hardware at 10 cm with light at an angle
- Strap fold and edge paint
- Interior base, open flat
- Label and stamp, straight on
- Length, height, and depth in centimeters
Fifteen photos is a workable minimum for a bag priced over 500 USD. A seller who sends three photos and no measurements is a risk.
Replica bags and condition terms
Replica and 1:1 mirror bags use different linings, plating, and edge paint than retail Burberry. Condition grades for replicas are set by the seller, not by a standard. Wear shows faster on chrome-plated hardware and on bonded leather trim. Before you compare two quotes, ask the supplier for the trim material, the plating type, and the stitch count per inch.
