A fraudulent Chanel 22 medium is a bag made to imitate the real tote and then sold as authentic. The 22 has no flap and no turn-lock, so the usual flap-bag checks do not apply. Authentication rests on proportions, the metal CHANEL logo on the front panel, the leather drawstring cord, hardware finish, stitch quality, and the metal chip plate sewn inside the lining. A replica sold openly as a replica is a different product from a bag sold under a false claim of authenticity. The fraud is the claim, not the leather.

Step-by-step authentication check
- Lay the bag flat and measure the base, the height, and the depth. A medium 22 sits at about 37 cm wide, 40 cm tall, and 8 cm deep. A copy that is off by more than 1 cm on any side usually has a distorted silhouette.
- Hold the bag by the chain and feel the pull. A real chain has dense, heavy links with a smooth plating and no rattle.
- Study the metal CHANEL letters on the front. Stroke width is even, the surface is mirror smooth, and the letters sit flush against the leather with no gaps or glue lines.
- Run your thumb along the diamond quilting at the side seams. Points should meet and continue across the seam instead of stopping short.

- Open the bag and find the interior stamp. "CHANEL" and the country of origin are hot-stamped into the lining leather, centered, with crisp edges and no bleeding.
- Locate the metal chip plate inside the lining. Chanel replaced the hologram sticker with a metal chip in 2021, and the 22 launched after that change. The plate carries a serial number and a scannable code. Lettering is laser etched, not printed, and it does not rub off under a thumbnail.
