Short answer
No single detail proves a pre-owned Balenciaga is genuine. You need three or four checks to agree with each other: the interior tag, the zipper maker, the hardware finish, and whether the seller's story fits the age of the bag. One mismatch is enough reason to walk away. Two or more, and you are almost certainly looking at a fake.

Start with the interior tag
Most Balenciaga bags carry a leather tag sewn into the lining, stamped BALENCIAGA.PARIS with a period after the brand name. Below it sits a line of numbers, usually two groups that identify the style and the color or production run. Some newer styles use a metal plate or a different interior label instead, so match the tag to the era of the bag before you judge it.
What I look for:

- Small, even lettering. Fakes tend to be too bold, too thin, or spaced wrong.
- Clean stitching around the tag. Crooked or doubled stitches are a bad sign.
- The back of the tag. Older bags show MADE IN ITALY, sometimes with a letter or number.
- Numbers that make sense. A style code should match the bag in front of you, not a different model.
Zippers tell you more than the logo
Balenciaga has sourced zippers from Lampo for many models. Lampo pulls are stamped on the side or underside of the pull, and the teeth are dense and smooth. A rough zip, a plastic-feeling pull, or a YKK stamp on a bag that should use Lampo is a red flag. Some styles use a pull with a B on it, and those have their own font and weight to compare against.

If a seller will not photograph the zipper pull and the zipper head up close, that alone is information.
Hardware and leather
Older bags use antique brass or aged silver. The metal feels heavy in the hand and does not flake or turn bright yellow. Rivets sit flush and even. On Giant hardware, the studs are spaced evenly with clean edges. Cheap copies show shiny plating, sharp corners, and screws that strip the first time you tighten them.
Balenciaga's agneau lambskin is soft, slightly wrinkled, and matte. It creases where the bag folds. Fakes often feel stiff or slick, or the grain is too uniform across the whole panel. Stitching should be even and matched to the leather color, with no loose threads at the handle bases.
What receipts and cards actually prove
Almost nothing. An authenticity card is one of the easiest things to copy, and a receipt shows that someone bought something at a Balenciaga store, not that this bag is that item. Dust bags changed design over the years, so a mismatched dust bag on a ten-year-old bag is normal and not proof either way.
Price is worth reading as a signal. A genuine City bag in decent shape rarely sells for a small fraction of retail. A listing at a few hundred dollars with a story about needing it gone today is a warning, not a bargain.
Photos to ask for before you pay
- Front and back of the interior tag, well lit and close.
- The zipper pull and the zipper head, showing any stamp.
- Hardware close ups, including rivets and studs.
- Stitching at the handle bases and the bag's corners.
- The dust bag, if one is included.
Vague photos or an offer to send more later usually means there is nothing better to send. When the bag arrives or before you commit, a paid authentication service such as Entrupy or Real Authentication costs a small fee and looks at details a photo cannot capture. On a four-figure bag, that is cheap insurance.
Pay in a way that protects you
Use a platform with buyer protection, a credit card, or a reseller that backs its own authentication. Never wire money, and never pay with a gift card or a friends-and-family transfer. Even a skilled eye can be fooled by a good copy in photos, so keep a refund path open until the bag is in your hands.
