Leather Grain and Surface
Burberry uses grained calfskin, smooth calfskin, and embossed lambskin across the TB, Knight, and Check lines. Grain on tanned hide varies: pores shift in size and spacing, and the surface softens where the bag flexes.

- PU-coated fakes crease in straight lines. Leather folds in irregular curves.
- A genuine panel returns to shape after pressure. A coated fake keeps the mark.
- Solvent, glue, or paint thinner smell points to synthetic material.
Leather thickness is the check photos cannot show. Ask for a weight in grams and a photo of the cut edge at 45 degrees. A thin panel hides behind camera sharpening.
Edge Paint and Stitching
Painted edges on Burberry leather goods match the hide color and stop at the stitch line. Fake edge coat is glossy, 1 mm to 2 mm thick, and cracks at the corners. Stitch density is a second marker: Burberry leather goods run 8 to 10 stitches per inch. Fakes show 5 to 6, with uneven gaps at the corners and a thread that fuzzes when rubbed.
Stamps, Logos, and Spelling
Hot-foil and blind stamps on the interior tab read BURBERRY. Older items made before 1999 read Burberrys, with a final S. The company dropped the S in 1999, so a bag with modern hardware and a Burberrys stamp has a problem. The Haymarket check and the equestrian knight design carry the word PRORSUM. Fakes render it as PROSUM, PRORSIUM, or drop the word.
Stamp depth is measurable. A hot foil stamp cuts into the leather with a crisp edge and even color. A fake stamp sits on the surface, spreads at the serifs, or shows a heat burn ring.
Hardware and Zippers
Burberry hardware is metal with engraving, not casting. Look for a cut edge on logo plates and a TB monogram where thick and thin bars hold one stroke weight. Cast fakes show pitting, rounded edges, and mold lines on the back of the plate. Burberry sources zippers from Lampo and Riri on Italian-made bags; the pull carries a stamp on the underside. A blank pull or a plastic tooth track is a strong signal.
Interior Labels and Codes
Many Burberry bags carry a small white tag sewn into a seam with a numeric code. The code changes per production run and Burberry publishes no decoder. Fakes reuse one number across many units.
