The serial number inside the bag is the first check on a Chanel shoulder bag. Bags made from the mid-1980s through 2020 carry a hologram sticker on the interior back wall, and the number on that sticker matches a plastic authenticity card. Bags made from the Spring/Summer 2021 collection onward carry a metal plate with a built-in chip instead. A shoulder bag with no sticker, no card, and no plate is a replica.

Serial Number by Era

Chanel serial numbers have 7 digits before 2005 and 8 digits from 2005 through 2020. The hologram sits on the lower left interior back panel on a Classic Flap. Look for a rainbow reflection across the sticker surface and sharp digit edges. The card number must match the sticker number digit for digit. Copies exist, so a matching number does not prove the bag is real.

Hardware: CC Turnlock and Screws

The two C's interlock at one point. The right C passes over the top of the left C and sits behind it at the bottom. The turnlock sits square on the flap. A crooked lock is a red flag. Older bags use flat-head screws on the back plate; some later bags use hex or specialty screws. Gold-tone hardware on an authentic bag has weight. Zinc alloy hardware on replicas feels light in the hand.

Stitching and Quilting

Classic Flap quilting runs about 10 to 12 stitches per inch. Replica stitching drops to 6 or 8 stitches per inch, and the line wobbles. The back pocket on a Classic Flap is diamond quilted, and the pocket diamonds align with the body quilting. On replicas the pocket quilting is flat or offset by several millimeters.

Leather, Lining, and Heat Stamp

Lambskin Classic Flaps have burgundy leather lining, not fabric. Caviar leather has a pebbled grain. The interior heat stamp reads CHANEL in capital letters, with MADE IN FRANCE or MADE IN ITALY below. Stamp depth is even across the letters. Shallow or blurry stamps point to a fake.

Chain and Strap

The chain is leather woven through metal links. On a Classic Flap, each leather strip covers 7 to 8 links. The medium Classic Flap has a strap drop near 9 inches doubled and 17 inches worn single. A Boy Bag uses a different chain with a leather pad at the shoulder. Chain weight and link shape are hard to copy.

Price and Source

Chanel has raised Classic Flap prices multiple times, and the medium size now retails above $10,000 at brand boutiques. Used medium Classic Flaps sit above $5,000 in most resale markets. A shoulder bag offered at $300 with a full set of packaging is not an authentic Chanel.

Checks for a Bag You Cannot Hold

Ask the seller for photos of the interior sticker or plate, both sides of the hardware, the heat stamp, the chain links, and the receipt. Photos of the box, dust bag, and ribbon prove nothing. Replica sellers copy packaging. Search the serial number online; reused numbers appear on multiple listings.

Limits of Any Check

High-grade replicas match stitch counts, hardware weight, and serial numbers. At that level, a paid authentication service or a brand boutique handles the bag. No photo guide replaces a hands-on inspection.
