Short answer
Gold hardware is the part that fails first on a fake Chanel Boy. Four checks sort most bags: clasp weight, plating color in daylight, engraving depth under a 10x loupe, and the serial mark inside. Chanel added the Boy to its line in 2011. Hardware finish changed by season, so compare a bag against examples from the same year.
What gold means on a Boy
Chanel does not publish a plating spec. Resale listings and repair notes describe three finishes: shiny gold, aged gold, and matte gold. Plating sits on a base metal. Repair notes describe a brass base on many models from the 2010s. Copy makers use zinc alloy or steel. Brass feels cold at first touch and warms in the hand. Zinc alloy stays light.
Color is the second tell. Gold plating on brass reads yellow with a red cast in daylight. Thin plating over zinc reads pale or green in the same light. Check near a window, not under a store lamp. Store lamps hide the shift.
Weight and measurements
Use a kitchen scale that reads to 1 gram. Record the bag with the chain. Record the chain alone. Replica hardware runs light because the clasp body and the chain links hold less metal.
Chanel publishes no public size chart. Figures from resale houses cluster around these numbers:
- Small: about 15 x 25 x 8 cm
- Old Medium: about 15 x 25 x 9 cm
- New Medium: about 18 x 28 x 9 cm
- Large: about 21 x 30 x 10 cm
Measure with a ruler in centimeters. A bag that sits 1 cm off on two axes is a different size, not a rounding error.
Clasp and chain
The Boy closes with a push lock. Press it. A solid lock moves on a spring with a short, even throw and stops. A cheap lock grinds or travels past the stop. Look at the plate behind the pin. Tool marks show as parallel scratches.
Count the chain links on each side of the leather. Count the leather loops. Numbers should match on both sides. Gold plating wears at the link edges first. Rub a link edge with a white cloth. A gold smear on the cloth means the plating is thin.
Engraving and serial marks
Chanel engraves its name and the CC logo on the clasp plate in some seasons. Use a 10x loupe. Genuine engraving has a flat floor and sharp walls. Acid-etched copies show rounded edges and a grainy floor.
Serial marks changed in 2021. Bags before 2021 carry an 8-digit hologram sticker and a plastic card. Bags from 2021 carry a metal plate with a chip and no card. A bag dated 2022 with a hologram sticker does not line up.
The legal part
In the US, selling a handbag with a counterfeit Chanel mark is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. First offense carries up to 10 years in prison. Chanel also files civil suits, and US Customs seizes shipments at the border. Buyers who resell face the same exposure as sellers who import.
What a check cannot tell you
Leather source, stitch count per inch on the interior, and glue type need a bench inspection. No photo set answers those. If a listing shows the front clasp alone, ask for the interior serial, the back plate, and a scale photo. Sellers who refuse those three items leave the question open.
