Fake Dior bag authentication: the short answer
Check four points: the interior date code tag, the hardware engravings, the cannage stitching, and the interior label. Dior does not ship its leather bags with an authenticity card, so paperwork proves nothing. A dust bag and a receipt also prove little. The bag carries the evidence.
1. Interior date code tag
Dior leather goods hold a small leather tag inside an interior pocket or seam. The tag carries a stamped code. The format changes by production year. Older bags use six digits. Bags from recent years use two letters plus four digits, where the letters mark the workshop and the digits mark the month and year. The stamp is crisp, level, and dark. Fakes show a blurred stamp, a wrong typeface, or a code that does not match the model year.
Some Dior bags made from 2021 onward hold a small RFID chip or a chip sticker under the lining. No chip does not prove a fake. Older bags never had one.
2. Hardware and engravings
Genuine Dior hardware is solid, with smooth edges and no casting seam. The CD letters and the Dior name sit deep in the metal. The engraving has sharp corners. Fakes use zinc alloy, which feels light, and the engraving looks shallow or wavy at the edges.
On the Lady Dior, four metal letters sit on a ring at the front: D, I, O, R. Each letter is cut metal and moves on its own ring. On fakes the letters often sit fixed, the ring holes are oval instead of round, and the metal has a dull tone or a coat of gold paint over base metal.
On the Saddle bag, check the D hardware on the flap and the leather tab above it. The tab edges are cut clean and the holes sit on center. Replica tabs often run crooked or show glue at the edge.
3. Cannage stitching and quilting
The cannage pattern is the diamond quilt on the Lady Dior. On a genuine bag the diamond points meet in a straight line down the front panel. The stitch length is even and the thread matches the leather color. Fake panels show drift: the diamonds widen at the bottom, or the thread sits one shade off.
Run a thumb over the quilt. Genuine lambskin feels soft and shows a light grain. The fake version often uses a coated split leather that feels slick and holds a crease.
4. Interior label and logo
Inside, a leather patch holds the Christian Dior stamp. The letters are set in a hand-drawn serif face. The D has a narrow bowl and the O sits slightly taller than the surrounding caps. Fakes fall back on Times New Roman or Arial, and the letter spacing runs wide.
Most Lady Dior bags are made in Italy, and the interior stamp reads Made in Italy. A missing origin line, or a stamp that reads Made in France on a model that was never made there, is a red flag.
5. Dust bag, box, and paperwork
Genuine Dior dust bags use a heavy cotton canvas with a drawstring and a woven logo tag. Textile printing on fakes smears, and the drawstring cord frays. Dior care cards list the leather type and an article number. Replica kits often include a plastic card, a laminated card, or a serial card. Dior does not issue those.
Quick checklist
- Date code stamp: crisp, level, right format for the year
- Hardware: solid weight, deep engraving, no casting seam
- Lady Dior letters: cut metal, free movement, round ring holes
- Cannage: diamond points line up, even stitch length
- Interior stamp: correct serif face, correct origin line
- No authenticity card in the box
What cannot be confirmed
Dior does not run a public online authentication service. It refers clients to boutique after-sales service, and staff there assess repairs, not resale value. A photo check by a stranger on a forum carries no weight. For a bag bought second hand, a paid third-party authenticator remains the only route. No single detail proves a fake on its own. Read all four points together.
