A fake Gucci bag is a counterfeit. It carries the Gucci name, the GG logo, or the green-red-green Web stripe without a license from Gucci. In the United States, selling one is a federal crime. Buying one is not a crime in most states, but the buyer gets no warranty, no repair service, and no legal resale path.

Gucci was founded in Florence in 1921. The company owns trademarks on the name, the interlocking GG mark, the Web stripe, and the Flora print. Markers people use to spot fakes
- Serial tag: authentic Gucci bags carry a leather tag with a serial number inside the bag, not on a paper card.
- Stitching: even stitch length, no skipped stitches, no loose thread.
- Hardware: weight, finish, and engraving depth. Copies often use light hardware with shallow engraving.
- Logo stamp: the "Gucci made in Italy" stamp is crisp and even. Blurry or crowded letters point to a copy.
- Packaging: dust bag weave, font, and box construction follow a fixed spec.
No single test is final. Counterfeit plants copy serial tags and packaging. A 2024 fake from a high-volume line can pass a quick look.
Price signals
A new Gucci Jackie, Marmont, or Dionysus bag sells for about $1,500 to $4,500 at retail. Listings at $80 to $300 for a "new" bag with tags are not discounted authentic goods. Resale sites price used authentic Gucci below retail but above the counterfeit range.
Authentication steps
- Ask the seller for the serial number and the receipt.
- Compare the serial format to the one Gucci used in that model year.
- Request close photos of the stamp, tag, and hardware.

Gucci does not authenticate bags for customers in stores. Third-party services and resale platforms do that work.
What a fake costs the buyer
No repairs. Gucci will not service a counterfeit. No resale on the large platforms. Poshmark, The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective, and eBay pull counterfeit listings when they are flagged. Customs can seize a counterfeit bag at the border, and the buyer loses the money.
