The Constance 18 and the Constance 24 are the same design at two proportions, and on replicas the size you pick decides which flaws you will actually see. The 18 is small enough that everything sits close to the eye: the H clasp, the edge paint, the foil stamp. The 24 has more flat panel, so sag, stitch drift, and plating wear show up first. Order a sample of each before committing to a wholesale run. They are not the same bag built to different scales.
Best Constance 24/18 Hermes: A Comparison Review
How the two sizes compare
The 18 measures roughly 18 cm across; the 24 roughly 24 cm. Height and depth scale with it, about 15 x 5 cm for the 18 and 18 x 7 cm for the 24. Capacity is the easy part. The 18 takes a phone, a cardholder, keys, and a lipstick, and nothing more. The 24 swallows a small wallet, sunglasses, and a compact without a fight.
The strap is where people get surprised. Both use a fixed strap that can be doubled, and neither adjusts. On most adults the 18 hangs crossbody. The 24 usually lands at the hip or higher, which reads more like a shoulder bag. If a supplier tells you the strap length is adjustable, they are describing a different bag.
What "1:1" means in the wholesale trade
Nothing official. It is a grade label suppliers invented, and it means different things in different factories. In practice you will see three tiers quoted: a basic machine-stitched build, a mid tier with better leather and corrected hardware, and a top tier where the H clasp is machined rather than cast and the leather is sourced to match weight and temper. Ask which tier you are being quoted and what changes between it and the tier below. A supplier who cannot answer that plainly is reselling someone else's stock.
The H clasp is where most replicas fail
The clasp is one piece of metal with a rotating bar behind it. Four things to check. Weight in the hand. Edge finish on the H, which should be softly polished rather than sharp. The gap between the H and the leather beneath it, which should be even all the way around. And on enamel versions, whether the enamel sits flush, with no ridge you can catch a fingernail on. Cast zinc with heavy plating photographs beautifully and feels light and tinny the moment you hold it.
Leather, structure, and why size matters
Epsom is the most common Constance leather: embossed, stiff, and good at holding shape. Swift is softer and matte and creases with use. Evercolor sits between the two. Box is glossy and scratches if you look at it wrong. On the 18, stiff leather is nearly mandatory. A soft build in that size collapses at the gusset and the flap stops sitting flat. On the 24, an Epsom build can feel boardy if the factory skimped on lining, so press the base and see whether it springs back.
Stitching, glazing, stamping
Saddle stitch means two needles, one thread on each side. The tell is not the stitch count, it is the tilt. Hand stitching sits at a slight angle and the thread carries a little slack. Machine stitching lies flat, uniform, and tight. Look at the corners, where machines have to pivot and hand stitchers do not.
Edge paint should be thin, even, and close in tone to the leather. Thick paint hides bad skiving and cracks at the fold within months of use.
The blind stamp carries the year letter, the craftsman mark, and the foil. On a replica the foil often runs too bright or sits a millimeter off center. Nobody sees it but you, and it is the fastest way to tell which tier you actually received.
Hardware weight and strap anchors
Weigh the hardware. A top tier clasp and strap fittings in solid brass with palladium plating run heavier than cast zinc every time. The strap anchors should sit flush with the leather rather than on top of it, and the rings should be welded, not split.
Questions to ask before you order
- Which tier is this, and what changes between it and the tier below?
- Can I see a video of the actual unit, with the clasp opening and closing?
- What is the leather name and weight, and can you send a swatch?
- What base metal is the hardware, and how thick is the plating?
- What happens to a flawed unit inside a bulk order?
Red flags
Stock photos only, no unit video. Prices that land far below the rest of the market for the same claimed tier. A supplier who calls the strap adjustable or lists the 18 and 24 with identical dimensions. Vague answers about leather names. Any of those, walk. The bag is a simple shape, and the factories that get it right are proud of the details, not shy about them.
Buy the size that fits how you carry a bag, then judge the build. Picking the 24 because it costs a little more per unit is the wrong way round.
