What the Evelyne is
Hermès introduced the Evelyne in 1978. The bag held grooming tools for stable staff, and the perforated H let air reach the brushes. Three sizes are common: TPM, PM, and GM. Published dimensions for the PM are about 29 cm wide, 30 cm tall, and 8 cm deep. Leathers include Clemence, Epsom, and Togo. The Evelyne III strap is a woven canvas band with leather ends and a buckle.
Prices
Boutique prices for the Evelyne sit between $3,000 and $5,000. Resale runs from near retail to 30 percent above retail for rare colors. Counterfeit Evelyne bags sell from $50 to $600. Sellers use terms like 1:1, mirror quality, and super fake. Those terms do not describe an authentic bag.
How to spot a fake Evelyne
Blind stamp
Hermès presses a blind stamp into each bag: a year code and a craftsman number, with no ink. The location changes by model and year. Fake stamps show ink, sit too deep, or use the wrong font.
Stitching
Hermès sews by hand with a saddle stitch. Two needles pass through each hole at an angle, so the stitch line leans. A single broken thread does not start a run. Machine stitching runs straight and flat, and one break pulls the row apart.
Hardware
The Evelyne closes with a snap under the front flap. Hermès uses palladium or gold plated hardware with weight and a clean edge. Counterfeit snaps grip too hard or too loose. Thin plating wears to a yellow base metal in months.
Perforated H
The H is cut, not printed. The hole edges are finished. Hole count and spacing change with size and production year, so compare against photos of the same size.
Strap and trim
The Evelyne III strap is a woven band. Fake straps fray at the leather joins and use webbing thinner than the original.
Packaging and smell
Hermès ships in an orange box with brown ribbon and a cotton dust bag. Fakes arrive in satin pouches or plastic. New leather smells like leather. Counterfeits smell like glue and solvent.
Legal status
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime in the United States under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments at the border. A buyer can lose the bag and the money.

What is not known
Hermès does not publish production numbers for the Evelyne, and it does not run a public authentication service. Third-party authenticators give opinions, not guarantees. If a stamp or a hardware detail does not match any documented example, treat the bag as unverified.
