What a fake Hermès reseller is
A fake Hermès reseller is a seller that offers Birkin, Kelly, or Constance bags as genuine Hermès pieces without authorization from Hermès. Hermès sells those models in its own boutiques. The company does not list Birkin or Kelly bags for sale on its website and does not appoint third-party resellers. A seller that claims a direct Hermès account for those models is making a false claim.
Red flags
- Inventory depth. The seller lists 20 or more Birkins in one size and color range. Hermès produces limited numbers. A boutique receives a few bags per delivery.
- Price. A Birkin 25 in Togo leather lists near $10,000 at retail in the US. Offers at $1,500 to $3,000 point to a counterfeit.
- Payment. Wire transfer, Zelle, or cryptocurrency with no refund path.
- Receipts. Copies of boutique receipts are easy to reproduce. A receipt proves nothing on its own.
- Photos. Stock images pulled from auction listings or from other sellers.
- Story. Claims of factory direct stock, shared production lines, or overrun inventory. Hermès runs no outlet channel and no overrun channel.
Legal facts
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. Penalties reach 10 years in prison for a first offense and 20 years for repeat offenses. Civil claims fall under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments at ports of entry and destroys them. The importer gets no refund and no return of the goods.
How to check a seller
- Ask for the boutique of purchase and the purchase date. Hermès does not confirm client purchases to third parties, so expect no answer.
- Send photos to an independent authenticator. Entrupy and Bababebi are two names buyers use. Fees run about $10 to $100 per bag.
- Buy through a platform with escrow and a return window. Auction houses such as Christie's and Sotheby's run their own checks before listing.
- Check the seller's record on the platform. Do not rely on reviews posted on the seller's own site.
No authentication method is perfect. Hermès does not authenticate bags for the public and does not run a verification service. A low price on a Birkin is the strongest single signal of a counterfeit.
