Machine printing gives flat color and soft edges. The hem is flat and sewn by machine. A care tag may read "100% silk" with no fiber test behind it.
Legal status in the US
The Hermès name, the orange box, and the Bolduc ribbon are registered US trademarks. Scarf prints fall under copyright. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. A civil suit can seek up to $200,000 per counterfeit mark per type of good, or $2 million if the use is willful, under 15 U.S.C. 1117(c). US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments and destroys the goods. Personal purchases carry less legal risk than resale, but the goods can still be seized.
