How to Check a Bag Before You Buy
Date Codes and Microchips
Louis Vuitton printed date codes on bags until March 2021. The format ran two letters and four digits, such as SD4168. The letters marked the factory. The digits marked the week and year. Most bags made from 2021 onward carry an RFID microchip. A 2023 bag with a printed date code and no chip is suspect.
Heat Stamp and Hardware
Heat stamps read "LOUIS VUITTON" plus a country of origin. The letter "O" is round, not oval. Fake stamps show uneven spacing, wrong font weight, or the word "Paris" in the wrong place. Hardware is brass with a dull finish. Fakes use bright gold plating that flakes.
Stitching and Canvas
Stitch lines on authentic bags run straight and even. Thread color matches the canvas. Monogram canvas bends and softens with age. Fake canvas feels stiff and plastic. On the monogram, the LVs align with the seam on both sides.
Legal Risk for Buyers and Sellers
18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers counterfeit trafficking. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. Corporations face up to $5 million. 15 U.S.C. § 1114 lets a brand sue for statutory damages up to $2 million per counterfeit mark per type of goods. Louis Vuitton sues sellers and platforms. What Happens at Customs
CBP seized 19,724 shipments of counterfeit goods in FY2023. The MSRP value was $2.7 billion. Handbags and wallets ranked first by seizure count. CBP destroys seized goods. Importing a counterfeit bag can trigger a civil penalty up to the value of the merchandise for a first seizure. A second seizure raises the penalty to twice the value.
