Handbag ornaments are the decorative and functional parts fixed to a bag: buckles, rings, studs, turn-locks, zipper pulls, chains, charms, and tassels. Most of them carry no load. They set the first impression a buyer forms. In wholesale, hardware grade changes perceived value more than stitching does.

This guide covers base metals, plating thickness, charm construction, and the tests buyers run on samples.

What Counts as an Ornament

Ornaments sit in three groups.

  • Closure hardware: turn-locks, push-locks, magnetic snaps, buckles, clasps.
  • Connection hardware: D-rings, O-rings, rectangular rings, swivel hooks, chain straps, rivets, eyelets, studs.
  • Surface decoration: metal logos, nameplates, corner plates, charms, tassels, bead drops, stud patterns.

Zipper pulls and sliders sit between closure and decoration. They take the most hand contact, so plating wear shows there first.

Base Metals

Four metals cover most bag hardware.

  • Zamak. A zinc alloy. Zamak 3 holds about 4 percent aluminum with trace magnesium. Zamak 5 adds about 1 percent copper. The alloy die-casts at low temperature, holds fine detail, and accepts plating. Density is about 6.6 g/cm3.
  • Brass. Copper and zinc, with copper between 60 and 70 percent. Density is about 8.4 g/cm3, so a brass part weighs about 27 percent more than the same zamak part. Brass resists corrosion and can be left unfinished.
  • Stainless steel. Grades 304 and 316 go into chains, rings, and spring gates. The metal needs no plating to resist rust.
  • Plated steel and iron. The lowest cost option. Once the coating chips, the base rusts in days in humid air.

Plating and Finish

Electroplating thickness runs from about 0.1 micron on low-cost gold-tone parts to 3 microns on heavy-duty finishes. A clear lacquer or an electrophoretic coat sits on top. PVD coatings are harder than electroplating and resist scratching.

Color names in the trade: light gold, yellow gold, rose gold, palladium, antique brass, gunmetal, matte black, brushed nickel.

Two lab tests decide most disputes.

  1. Salt spray, ASTM B117 and ISO 9227. A part sits in a fog of 5 percent sodium chloride solution at 35 C. Results are reported as hours to white rust or red rust. Common grades are 24, 48, and 96 hours.
  2. Nickel release. REACH limits nickel release to 0.5 micrograms per square centimeter per week for items in prolonged skin contact. Steel hardware often carries a nickel strike layer under the gold. A gold layer that wears through exposes it.

Charms, Tassels, and Drops

Check the attachment before the charm. A soldered closed loop outlasts a split ring. A split ring outlasts an open jump ring. A charm that swings on one point of contact wears through the plating at that point.

Tassels use silk, polyester, rayon, or cut leather. Silk holds a straight fall. Polyester holds color. Count the strands and check the cap. A metal cap glued to the cord fails before a stitched cap.

How to Judge a Sample

  1. Weigh two rings of the same size. Brass and zamak differ by density.
  2. Scratch the back of a plate with a fingernail. Plating that lifts is under 1 micron.
  3. Look at the parting line on a die-cast buckle. A visible seam means a worn mold.
  4. Turn every screw. Screw-back plates can be repaired. Riveted plates cannot.
  5. Rub a white cotton cloth on the part. Black residue points to a thin or missing lacquer.
  6. Ask for the salt spray report and the plating thickness in microns.

Care and Failure Points

Alcohol strips lacquer. Hand sanitizer, perfume, and sunscreen are the three common causes of cloudy gold-tone hardware. Chlorine and salt water pit plated steel. Wipe parts with a dry cotton cloth after use. Store the bag in a dust bag with a silica gel packet. Brass darkens with age. A soft cloth removes light tarnish. Abrasive polish removes plating.

Zipper pulls take the most wear. Order spare pulls and charms with each batch. A spare part costs little and prevents a return.

Wholesale Buying Notes

  • Ask for the metal name, not just the color word. Gold is a finish. Zamak 3 with 0.5 micron gold plating is a spec.
  • Confirm nickel release for any part that touches skin, including rings and chain straps.
  • Request 48 hour salt spray as a floor for exterior hardware.
  • Keep one metal family per bag. Mixed plating families show different wear rates over 12 months.
  • Match replacement charms and pulls to the plating batch. Plating color shifts between batches.

No spec guarantees a part will not tarnish. Salt spray hours predict lab performance, not daily use. Ask the supplier for the test report and compare the number against the price.
