What the term covers
A replica Burberry backpack is an unlicensed copy of a backpack design that Burberry Group plc sells. Sellers in the wholesale market label these bags "replica," "1:1," or "mirror quality." Those labels come from sellers. Burberry does not use them.
Wholesale prices run from about $35 for a small nylon copy to about $120 for a leather-trim bag. Burberry retail backpacks sell from about $890 to $2,000.
Under US law, a replica Burberry backpack is an infringing product. The Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114, covers counterfeit marks on goods in commerce. Importing or selling such a bag exposes the seller and the buyer to seizure, damages, and criminal charges.
Which Burberry backpacks get copied
Three Burberry designs show up in replica listings:
- Vintage Check, the beige, black, red, and white plaid Burberry has used since the 1920s.
- TB monogram, the Thomas Burberry initials pattern introduced in 2018.
- Equestrian Knight Device, the horse and rider mark registered in 1909.
Body shapes copied include the flat zip backpack, the top-handle backpack, and the mini backpack. Materials in the copies are coated canvas or polyester with polyurethane backing. The originals use bonded cotton, nylon, and calf leather trim.
Replica vs retail: what changes
- Print: Burberry check sits on an even grid. Copies show seams where the pattern drops out of line.
- Hardware: retail zips carry the Burberry name in a raised font. Copies use blank pulls or a stamped font with uneven depth.
- Stitching: retail runs 8 to 10 stitches per inch. Copies run 5 to 7.
- Linings: retail uses cotton twill or nylon with a sewn label. Copies use thin polyester with a glued tag.
- Serial tags: retail bags carry a style number and a country of manufacture. Copies reuse one number across colors.
Customs and legal risk in the US
US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit goods at the port. CBP reported about 19,700 intellectual property seizures in fiscal year 2023, with an estimated manufacturer's suggested retail value of $2.6 billion. Wearing apparel and accessories were the top seized category.
Civil penalties under 15 U.S.C. § 1117(c) reach $2 million per counterfeit mark per type of goods when the use is willful. Criminal penalties under 18 U.S.C. § 2320 reach 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for a first offense by an individual, and $5 million for a corporation.
The personal-use exemption that applies to some dutiable goods does not apply to counterfeit merchandise.
What the quality labels mean
"1:1," "AAA," "mirror," and "master copy" are seller terms. There is no grading body, no standard, and no inspection behind them. Two sellers can use "1:1" for bags from different factories. A buyer who sees a quality label is reading marketing copy, not a specification.
What a listing should state
A listing gives useful facts when it states the fabric, the hardware metal, the stitch count, the lining, and the size in centimeters. A listing that shows only photos and a grade label gives no verifiable data.
Burberry enforces its marks. The company runs a takedown program and reports infringing sellers. Buyers and resellers who handle replica goods carry legal risk along with the seller.
