Most bags sold as replica Dior use split-grain leather, bonded leather, or polyurethane. Authentic Lady Dior bags use lambskin or calfskin. In the United States, selling a counterfeit bag is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. Buying one for personal use is not a federal crime, but Customs and Border Protection can seize the item at import.
What the word replica covers
"Replica" and "1:1" are seller terms, not legal terms. A bag that copies Dior trade dress, the cannage quilting, the charm, or the logo hardware is a counterfeit item under US trademark law. Dior holds registered marks on the name and the cannage pattern. No replica seller holds a license to use them.
Leather grades found in replica bags
- Split-grain leather. The lower layer of a hide after the top is removed. It has no natural grain, so makers stamp a pattern into it and seal it with PU or pigment. It is real leather with a plastic surface.
- Bonded leather. Scraps ground up and glued with a binder. Leather content can run as low as 10 to 20 percent. It peels at flex points.
- PU and PVC. Polyurethane is a plastic coating on fabric backing. PVC is vinyl. Both are common in bags priced under $150.
- Lambskin and calfskin. Some high-priced replicas do use these. The material is genuine. The branding is not.
Tests for real leather
Look at the surface with a magnifier. Real leather has pores that follow the animal's hair pattern, and that pattern is irregular across a panel. Stamped split leather shows a repeating, identical pattern. Check the edge. A cut edge of full-grain leather shows a fiber mat; PU shows a fabric weave under the coating. Press a thumb into the surface. Leather creases into fine lines and returns. Plastic holds the dent or stays smooth. Smell is a weak test, because coatings mask the smell of leather.
What sets the price
Three parts: hide grade, hardware, and labor. Brass hardware with real plating costs more than zinc alloy with a thin electroplated coat. Hand-set stitching costs more than machine runs. A bag with lambskin and brass hardware cannot sell for $80 and cover costs.
Care and lifespan
Coated split leather and PU last 1 to 3 years with daily use before the coating cracks at stress points. Lambskin lasts longer if conditioned, but it scratches and absorbs oil. Keep bags out of direct sun and store them stuffed in a dust bag.
Legal status
Under 15 U.S.C. § 1114, a trademark owner can sue for damages. CBP seizes counterfeit goods at ports and destroys them. Penalties for trafficking reach $2,000,000 in fines and 10 years in prison for a first offense in some cases. FTC guides require sellers to label a product as imitation if it contains bonded leather, a PU coating, or no leather at all.
Open question
No public data exists on the share of replica bags that use genuine leather. Sellers self-report. Independent lab testing of this market is rare.
