What "leather" means on a replica Versace bag

The four grades
- Full-grain. The top layer of the hide. Grain intact, no sanding. Bag weight runs 1.2 mm to 1.6 mm thick. Grain marks stay visible.
- Top-grain. The top layer sanded, then embossed or coated. Most pebbled finishes are top-grain. Thickness runs 1.0 mm to 1.4 mm.
- Split leather. The lower layer of the hide. Surface is sprayed or laminated with PU. Fibers under the coat are loose.
- Bonded leather. Leather scrap ground and mixed with a binder. Leather fiber content sits near 20 to 30 percent. The rest is glue and backing.
How Versace uses leather and how replicas copy it
Versace handbag pages list materials such as calfskin, nappa leather, and patent calfskin. Nappa is soft chrome-tanned leather, 0.7 mm to 1.0 mm thick. Patent leather carries a lacquer finish over the hide.
Replica makers copy the grain with embossing plates or a heat press. A heat press flattens the grain. An embossing plate repeats the same pattern across the panel. Flip the bag and compare grain from panel to panel. Repeating grain means a plate, not a hide.
Checks at the wholesale table
- Cut edge. Full-grain shows a dense fiber structure. Bonded leather shows a uniform fuzzy sheet with no layers.
- Weight. Hold two bags of the same size. Full-grain runs heavier.
- Water drop. Untreated full-grain darkens, then dries. Coated leather beads the drop.
- Smell. Chrome-tanned leather has a distinct smell. PU smells like plastic.
- Hardware. Gold-tone zinc alloy versus brass. Brass weighs more and does not flake. The Medusa head needs die casting. Sharp edges, soft detail, and uneven studs point to low tooling cost.
- Stitching. Bag seams run 6 to 8 stitches per inch. Count them over 25 mm. Uneven spacing means a rushed line.
- Lining. Microfiber suede, cotton twill, or polyester satin. Thin satin tears at the zipper end.

Care
Keep leather out of direct sun. Store the bag in a dust bag with the strap inside. Condition with a neutral cream every 3 to 6 months. Wipe patent leather with a dry cloth only.
