A vintage Victoria lookalike copies the Hermès Victoria: a soft, flat tophandle bag with a zip top and no rigid frame. Buyers compare five points. Silhouette. Leather grain. Hardware finish. Blind stamp. Handle drop. Get those five right and the bag reads as vintage stock. Miss the hardware and it reads as a new run.
What the Victoria is
Hermès made the Victoria as a travel and weekend bag. The body has no frame. It slumps when empty. Two rolled handles sit on the top panel. A zip closes the mouth. Most versions carry no shoulder strap. The Victoria II added a removable strap on some runs. Resold examples date from the 1990s and 2000s, with smaller later releases.
Leathers
Clemence and Togo are the common hides. Both are tumbled calf. Clemence is heavier and softer. Togo shows a finer, tighter grain. Epsom appears on structured runs, and older bags show vache. Grain depth changes from hide to hide, so two bags from the same year can look different. Corrected-grain leather takes a flat, uniform print. Full-grain tanned calf shows variation across the panels.
Hardware and stamps
Hardware runs in palladium tone or gold tone over brass. Zipper pulls are leather tabs, not metal. The heat stamp sits inside and reads HERMÈS PARIS, with MADE IN FRANCE below it. A blind stamp marks the year. Hermès pairs a letter with a shape, and the code table changed several times. Verify the letter and the shape against a current chart. Old tables do not cover later years.
Sizes
Listings cite sizes in centimeters. The PM sits near 35 cm across, the MM near 38 cm, the GM near 43 cm. Sellers measure the base, not the top opening. Numbers move one or two centimeters by year. Ask for a tape measure photo on the base panel.
Price bands
Vintage Victoria bags at auction move in four figures to low five figures in USD. Condition, leather, and size set the number. Replica listings sit far below that range. A wholesale quote in the low hundreds per unit points to corrected-grain leather and zinc alloy hardware. Tanned calf and brass with plating cost more to make.
Checks before you buy
- Handle drop: measure from the top of the handle to the bag mouth.
- Zip: metal teeth, leather pull, smooth run. A zip that sticks on a soft bag points to poor panel alignment.
- Stitching: saddle stitch, slanted, even spacing on both faces.
- Stamp: pressed into the leather, not printed on top. A flat white print is wrong.
- Shape when empty: the bag should slump, not stand.
Questions for a wholesale supplier
- Which tannery supplied the hide, and is it full grain or corrected?
- Is the hardware brass with plating, or zinc alloy?
- What is the unit price at 10, 50, and 100 pieces?
- Can you send a photo of the base measurement and the interior stamp?
- What is the return window on a sample order?
One limit: Hermès does not publish a full Victoria production record. Year-by-year size charts come from resellers, not the brand. Treat any single chart as a guide, not proof.
