A vintage unauthentic Hermès bag is a bag made before about 2005 that copies a Hermès model and was not made by Hermès. The group covers 1980s and 1990s copies of the Kelly, Birkin, Constance, and Trim. Sellers use the word vintage to explain worn leather, faded stamps, and missing paperwork. Age does not make a copy real. Counterfeit and pirated goods made up about 2.5% of world trade in 2019, or USD 464 billion, per the OECD.
What vintage means in a listing
Most marketplaces treat an item as vintage at 20 years old or more. A 1996 bag counts. A 2012 bag does not. Hermès model dates: the sac à dépêches dates to 1935 and was renamed the Kelly in 1977. The Birkin launched in 1984. The Constance launched in 1959.
Year codes and blind stamps
Hermès stamps a blind code inside the bag. The format changed across decades: letters inside circles, squares, and other shapes from 1945 into the 1990s, then a new pattern after 2000. Hermès does not publish one full public chart. A copy maker guesses. Common errors: a stamp shape from the wrong decade, a stamp in the wrong panel, or a code that maps to a year before the model existed.
Vintage Forged Hermès Bags: What Buyers Should Know
Signals a vintage bag is not authentic
- Stitching. Hermès uses saddle stitch, two needles and one waxed thread, at about 8 to 10 stitches per inch. Copies show machine lock stitch, straight lines, and gaps in spacing.
- Hardware. Hermès uses brass with gold or palladium plating. Copies use thin plating, die-cast zinc, or plastic. Check weight and wear at the corners.
- Leather. Box calf, Barenia, Togo, Epsom, and Fjord have distinct grain and smell. Copies use split leather with a printed grain.
- Heat stamp. The Hermès Paris stamp is thin and even. Copies show thick letters, fill, or a wrong font.
- Construction. Look at edge paint, the turn of the flap, and the interior panel seams.
Price ranges
Common vintage Kelly and Birkin bags in calfskin resell from about $4,000 to $15,000. Exotic skins and rare sizes run higher. Copies sell for $200 to $1,200. A listing under $1,500 described as an authentic vintage Kelly is a mismatch with the market.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal offense under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. Selling a copy as authentic is trademark infringement and can count as fraud. US Customs can seize shipments. The first sale doctrine does not cover counterfeit items.
What to do
Ask for the blind stamp, an interior photo, and the receipt. Send photos to a paid authentication service. Hermès does not authenticate bags bought outside its boutiques. If price, stamp, and stitching disagree, treat the bag as a copy.
