A fake limited edition YSL bag fails on three points: the serial tag, the Cassandre hardware, and the packaging number. Check those three before anything else. No public list of serial prefixes confirms a bag, so read the marks together.
Serial tag and date code
YSL bags carry a leather tab inside with a serial number of 10 to 12 characters. Older pieces use a three-digit prefix plus digits. Prefixes map to factories. Those factory lists differ by year and are not published, so a prefix alone proves nothing. Compare stamp depth. Real stamps press into the leather. Fake stamps sit on the surface or leave a raised edge.
Saint Laurent used the Saint Laurent Paris label for ready-to-wear from 2012 under Hedi Slimane. Limited runs sold after 2018 often carry a date code that matches the code on the card and the dust bag. A mismatch is a stop sign.
Cassandre hardware
- Letters interlock at three contact points. Copies show gaps or meet at the wrong joint.
- Edges are milled. Cast burrs and seams point to a copy.
- Metal is brass based. Zinc alloy copies weigh less. Weigh the chain on a kitchen scale.
- Hinge tension holds the logo upright. Loose hinges show on low-cost copies.
Stitching and leather
Count stitches over one inch with a ruler. Authentic YSL bags run 8 to 10 stitches per inch. Copies run 5 to 6 and pull the leather into puckers. Limited editions use calfskin, lambskin, or exotic skins. Exotic skins need CITES paperwork for cross-border sale. Missing paperwork is a flag, and forged paperwork exists.
Packaging and numbers
Limited editions ship with a numbered card, ribbon, and box. Check the print on the box, not the card alone.
Scale of the problem
The OECD and EUIPO put global trade in counterfeit goods at about USD 464 billion in 2019. Handbags and leather goods sit among the top seized categories. US Customs and Border Protection lists apparel and accessories as a leading seizure group. Kering owns Saint Laurent and runs brand protection programs.
What no guide can confirm
Factory serial prefixes are private. A photo check cannot confirm leather origin. For a high-value limited edition, pay for an authentication service or buy from the brand.
